Some Cool Fellowship/Award Opportunities and/or Money Making Schemes:

Environmental Training Leadership Program

Through GreenCorps.org. Paid fellowship ($23k), student loan repayment and a leg up when applying for careers in environmental/ social change fields.

Grants for Women

I guess you could say it's sort of like Ladies Night at One Child Left Behind. Or. Not. But you could also check out this link: Funding Resources for NonTraditional/Women.

Johnson Fellowship

Very cool fellowship through the Fannie Mae Foundation for those who have worked in affordable housing and community development.

Leadership for a Changing World

17-20 leaders selected, each receiving  over $100,000 to support their community work. Are leaders born? Or are they made? Whichever it is, they still get paid.

NEA Grants

National Education Association gives mini-grants to all school personnel, not just teachers. So if you're an AmeriCorps member working at a school and have a great idea for a project, check'em out.

About.com

Can you update a web site? Do you know a lot about figure skating? Would you believe there's $500 a month in it for you? Check out the other topix, as well.

Freelance Writing Opps

Looking for a little work on the side? If you spend 20 hours a week blogging, you might as well put all that writing to work. I've gotten several freelance gigs from this site.

PW

Are you a poet, writer, or other artist? Then you need to start applying for awards, fellowships and scholarships. Then Poets & Writers is the place to go. The link doesn't work at the moment, but trust me, when it does...

Number 2

The first time I heard of Number 2 dot com, I thought, 'weird.' But I clicked on it anyway. Turns out, number 2 refers to the number 2 pencil, symbolic of standardized tests (ironically, symbolic of a common disorder associated with a fear of standardized tests). Long story short: this site offers free test prep. So if you're looking to take the GRE after AmeriCorps, number 2 is the, er number 1 way to go.

Unsung Heroes Award

100 Winners get $2,000 to fund their project. 3 others get awards ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. I bet they'll be singing after that. "We're in the mooooney! We're in the mooooney! We've got a lot of what it takes to, er...I forget the rest."

Volvo for Life Award

If you're nominated and win this do-gooder award, you'll drive away with a Volvo for life. That's right, a new Volvo every 3 years for as long as you live. Let's hope they have a hydrogen model in the works.

New Voices Fellowship

For California residents. Average salary of $35,000. Loan repayment up to $6k/year. Estimated two year total benefits package averages $100,000. I'm sensing another gold rush.

Echoing Green Fellowship

What if an organization devoted to supporting social entrepreneurs gave you $60,000 to make your vision come true? What do you do? What happens if the bus you're on is set to explode if it drops below 55? What do you do? You answer the first question. Let Keanu handle the second.

Youth Action Awards

Are you concerned about our world? Me too. Are you actively taking steps to make it better? Me too. Are you young? Damn you! Well, Youth Action would like to recognize one of us, anyway, for all the good work. In addition, there are profiles of other young people who have given us all the hope we so desperately need after watching the nightly news and three hours of reality television.

The Bruner Award

In search of overlooked excellence. These awards are given to places, not individuals. But if you think you live and serve in such a place, I'm sure they'd appreciate you nominating them for the award. Is it selfless? Sure. Will it give you that warm fuzzy? Definitely. Will any of those warm fuzzies turn out to be stinging caterpillars? A few. But without the Woolly Slug, there would be no Flannel Moth.

Brick/Do Something Awards

The Brick Awards recognize you young folks for doing all that good work. One of the first grants I ever wrote was for Do Something. I was so stoked, because at the time, the Brick Awards were handed out by the founder of this program, Andrew Shue. That's right! That Andrew Shue! You don't know who Andrew Shue is? Please leave.

Jane's Fellowship

A $10,000 stipend and the opportunity to apply for grant support for your agency are only two of the reasons you should consider this program. The third is that you must live in the Tacoma, Washington area. Please stop by. I'm bored.

I'll try to keep this reasonably updated. Send me an email if you have ed award questions: brandon@onechildleftbehind.com
